Thirty years after the discovery of the Mesa Verde cliff dwellings, the first scientific archaeological explorations in Colorado took place in a district of the upper San Juan River drainage known for a pair of prominent pinnacles called Chimney : Florence C. Lister. The Chimney Rock Archeological Area on the Pagosa Ranger District of the San Juan National Forest was established by the USDA Forest Service, Rocky Mountain Regional Forester's Order of (36 CFR authority). This acre area was set aside for the purposes of protecting and recreationally developing Chimney Rock's unique pre.
